Do Roll-to-Roll and Piece Printing Need Different Foils?
"Will this foil work on that machine too?" is one of the most common questions people ask when choosing a foil — and the answer isn't always yes. In the textile printing industry, foil-coated production generally runs on two different types of machine lines: Roll-to-Roll Printing (Smog/Rotary and Calender machines) and Piece Printing (Flatbed presses/Belt presses). What these two methods need from a foil — in terms of structure, form, and quality — genuinely differs.
In this article, we explain which foil type suits which method, why, and what that means for your day-to-day application.
Two Basic Foil Structures: Powder Foil and Total Foil
The two most common foil types on the market are structurally quite different from one another:
- Total Foil — Built from a colored polyurethane layer bonded to a carrier film.
- Standard Foil — Has a layer of metallic or matte powder coating on the carrier film; during transfer, this powder coating layer is deposited onto the opposing surface.
This structural difference is exactly what determines where each foil can be used.
Why Is Total Foil Only Suited to Roll-to-Roll Printing?
Total Foil can print by covering the entire surface — the polyurethane layer can only be transferred onto the target surface as a whole, complete layer. In other words, if the surface has already been printed with an adhesive paste in a specific pattern, Total Foil can't be selectively transferred to match that pattern.
That's why Total Foil is suited to roll-to-roll printing but can't be used in piece printing — piece printing, by its nature, usually calls for transferring a specific pattern rather than covering the full surface.
There's one exception: spray application on real leather. Total Foil's "can only cover the full surface" characteristic actually opens up a separate application. On real leathers such as goat, sheep, or calfskin, a water-based foil adhesive is first sprayed on, and Total Foil is then transferred over it. The result is a mirror-smooth gold, silver, or solid-color surface used in shoe and bag manufacturing. This isn't selective transfer onto a patterned paste like in piece printing — it's still a full-coverage application true to Total Foil's nature, just applied via spray on real leather pieces instead of a roll-to-roll machine.
Why Does Standard Foil Work for Both Methods?
Standard foil works differently: the powder particles on the carrier film can be transferred independently of one another onto an adhesive paste that has been applied to the surface in a pattern. This makes it much easier to apply the exact design you want. As a result, standard foils can produce the pattern effect you're after comfortably in both roll-to-roll and piece printing.
Beyond Foil Structure, What Else Should You Watch For?
Along with the foil itself, the adhesive used and the physical application conditions also differ between roll-to-roll and piece printing:
Adhesive heat requirements — Plastisol adhesives, commonly used in piece printing, generally require high temperatures. In roll-to-roll printing, where water- or solvent-based adhesives are typically used, the foil doesn't need to withstand high heat.
Wash fastness — With water-based adhesives, common in piece printing, wash fastness tends to be more of a critical factor; solvent-based adhesives, on the other hand, generally perform reliably here.
Roll size — A seemingly small detail that directly affects a workshop's efficiency:
- Piece printing: Since consumption involves foil cut to varying sizes and is relatively lower in volume, a smaller 2.5 cm diameter roll makes material handling easier.
- Roll-to-roll printing: Given the machine setup and higher-volume consumption, a sturdier 7.5 cm diameter roll is needed.
Summary: Which Foil, Where?
| Metraj Baskı | Parça Baskı | |
|---|---|---|
| Total Foil | Suitable | ✗ Not suitable |
| Standard Foil | Suitable | Suitable |
| Typical adhesive | Water/solvent/ plastisol-based |
Water/plastisol-based |
| High heat resistance needed | No | Yes |
| Standard roll diameter | 7,5 cm | 2,5 cm |
Note: There's one exception for Total Foil on real leather (goat, sheep, calfskin) — a water-based foil adhesive is sprayed on, then Total Foil is transferred, producing the mirror-smooth, full-coverage surfaces used in shoe and bag manufacturing.
